Best Langstroth Hive Kits of 2026: Complete Hives and the Boxes You Add Later

Affiliate disclosure: product links on this page go to Amazon, or to the maker's own store for brands that sell only direct. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you; a link to a maker's store earns us nothing. No retailer or brand sees our picks before they are published or has any say in them. How we choose.

A Langstroth hive kit is boxes, frames, a bottom board and two covers, and the best ones say their dimensions and their finish on the page. The Honey Lake 10-frame complete hive (two deeps, two mediums, forty frames, excluder, beeswax-coated cedar, $152) is the most hive for the money; the Hoover Hives Gold Standard is the one with a maker's specification page behind it; the POLLIBEE 8-frame kit is the 8-frame pick. The second half of this guide is the boxes you buy later: BeeCastle's and MayBee's single deeps and mediums with frames, and frame packs, because a kit is the start of a hive, not the end.

Dimensions are the whole game. Mann Lake, Hoover and Oregon State's PNW 744 all give 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 inches outside for a 10-frame box, 9 5/8 inches tall for a deep and 6 5/8 for a medium, and 14 inches wide for an 8-frame box. A kit that states those will stack with the next maker's; one that does not is a measurement away from a hive that leaks bees at the seams.

Best complete 10-frame kit

Honey Lake 10-Frame Complete Hive (2 deeps, 2 mediums, 40 frames)

Two deeps, two mediums, forty frames with waxed foundation, excluder, covers and bottom board in beeswax-coated cedar for $152.

Contents
2 deep, 2 medium, 40 frames, excluder, top and inner cover, bottom board, reducer (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Beeswax coated cedar, dovetail, pre-drilled (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Not stated on the listing
Frame size
10-frame

Pros

 • Four boxes for the price of two from a supplier
 • Queen excluder included
 • Dovetail joints and pre-drilled holes

Cons

 • No dimensions on the listing; measure before mixing with another maker
 • No Honey Lake specification page we could find
 • Unassembled

Honey Lake's four-box kit is the one in our beginner hives guide for buying once. As a Langstroth kit it is complete: two 10-frame deeps, two mediums, forty wood frames with pre-waxed plastic foundation, a telescoping top, an inner cover, a queen excluder, a solid bottom board and an entrance reducer. The listing describes the boxes as cedar with dovetail joints and pre-drilled holes, beeswax coated. It gives no outside dimensions.

That last point is the only reason it is not the first pick for someone who already owns boxes. For a first hive it does not matter; for a second hive beside a Mann Lake or Hoover one, measure the box against the standard before the bees see it.

2

Best documented kit

Hoover Hives Gold Standard 10-Frame Beehive Kit (2 deeps, 1 medium, beeswax dipped)

Three boxes and thirty frames, beeswax dipped, with every dimension on Hoover's own page.

Contents
2 deep, 1 medium, 30 frames, inner cover, fir bottom board, reducer (Hoover); telescoping cover and excluder per the listing
Finish
Dipped in natural beeswax (Hoover)
Stated dimensions
16 1/4 x 19 7/8 in; deep 9 5/8 tall, medium 6 5/8; deep frame 19 x 9 1/8 (Hoover)
Frame size
10-frame; 8-frame version sold separately, parts not interchangeable (Hoover)

Pros

 • Hoover publishes the dimensions, the frame sizes and the finish
 • Wax-coated CellTech foundation in every frame
 • 32 lb shipped

Cons

 • One medium; a second is a separate buy
 • Unassembled (screws and predrilled holes)
 • No warranty term

Hoover's Gold Standard is in three of our hive guides because it is the one Amazon kit with a maker page that answers every question: the box dimensions, the frame dimensions, the foundation, the wood finish, the weight, the fact that its 8-frame and 10-frame parts do not interchange. For a Langstroth kit that is what you are paying for.

The configuration (two deeps and a medium) is Oregon State's common Pacific Northwest brood chamber plus one honey super. Add a second medium from MayBee or BeeCastle in year two.

3

Best budget complete kit

BeeCastle 10-Frame Complete Beehive Kit, Beeswax Coated

BeeCastle's 10-frame complete hive, boxes soaked in boiled beeswax, at the standard dimensions, for about $129.

Contents
Deep and medium boxes with frames and waxed foundation, covers and bottom board; count per the listing title
Finish
Fully soaked in boiled beeswax, cedar, dovetail, pre-drilled (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Deep 16 1/4 x 19 7/8 x 9 5/8 in; medium 16 1/4 x 19 7/8 x 6 5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Frame size
10-frame

Pros

 • States the standard dimensions
 • The cheapest two-box kit here
 • Soaked rather than brushed with wax

Cons

 • No BeeCastle website; listing figures
 • Variants ($129, $144, $186) differ in box count
 • Unassembled

BeeCastle's 10-frame complete kit is listed at about $129 with cedar deep and medium boxes, pine frames with waxed foundation, a telescoping cover, an inner cover and a bottom board, with the boxes fully soaked in boiled beeswax, dovetail joints and pre-drilled holes, and the standard dimensions stated. The $144 and $186 listings carry more boxes under the same construction. We could not find a BeeCastle website.

It is the Hoover for $25 less with one fewer box and no maker page. The stated dimensions are what make it usable beside other makers' boxes.

4

Best deep-and-medium kit

MayBee 10-Frame Starter Hive (1 deep, 1 medium, wax-coated cedar)

A deep and a medium in wax-coated cedar with pine frames, a metal-capped cover and vented inner cover, $133, with matching $50 mediums to add.

Contents
1 deep, 1 medium, 20 frames, metal top cover, vented inner cover, bottom board, reducer (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Heavy wax-coated cedar (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Deep 19.9 x 16.3 x 9.5 in; medium 19.9 x 16.3 x 6.6 in; 20 in tall assembled (per the Amazon listing)
Frame size
10-frame; 8-frame kit $110

Pros

 • Listing states dimensions that match the standard within a tenth of an inch
 • Metal-capped cover
 • MayBee's medium super with ten frames is $49.99, the matching add-on

Cons

 • Two boxes; a super is needed by the second season
 • Listing figures only
 • Unassembled

MayBee's 10 Frame Starter Kit lists a deep and a medium in heavy wax-coated cedar with twenty pine frames on beeswaxed plastic foundation, a pre-assembled metal-capped top, a vented inner cover and a bottom board with reducer, at 19.9 by 16.3 inches and 20 inches tall for the pair. The dimensions are the standard to a tenth of an inch, which is as close as listing rounding gets. The MayBee medium super ($49.99 with ten frames) is the box you add.

5

Best 8-frame kit

POLLIBEE 8-Frame Beehive Starter Kit, Beeswax Coated

An 8-frame Langstroth kit for about $108, for the beekeeper who has chosen the lighter width.

Contents
8-frame boxes with frames and foundation, covers and bottom board (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Beeswax coated (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Not stated on the listing
Frame size
8-frame

Pros

 • 8-frame width: boxes about a fifth lighter than 10-frame
 • Under $110
 • BeeCastle's 8-frame deeps ($44) and mediums ($50) extend it

Cons

 • No dimensions on the listing; 8-frame width is 14 in (Oregon State) and worth checking
 • No maker page we could find
 • 8-frame nucs are rarer than 10-frame (see the width comparison)

POLLIBEE's 8-frame kit is listed at about $108 with beeswax-coated boxes, frames with foundation, covers and a bottom board; the listing states no outside dimensions. The 8-frame standard is 14 inches wide by 19 7/8 long (Oregon State PNW 744, Hoover), so a tape measure settles it. The width comparison covers why 8-frame suits a beekeeper who lifts alone, and BeeCastle's single 8-frame boxes are the add-ons.

6

Best supplier kit, painted and assembled

Mann Lake Traditional Growing Apiary Kit, 10-Frame

Two deeps and two supers with forty frames, assembled and painted by Mann Lake, $346.99 to $389.99.

Contents
2 deep hive bodies, 2 supers, 20 deep and 20 medium frames with foundation, telescoping cover, inner cover, bottom board, reducer (Mann Lake)
Finish
Painted (Mann Lake); unpainted version also sold
Stated dimensions
10-frame commercial deep 16 1/4 x 19 7/8 in outside (Mann Lake)
Frame size
10-frame

Pros

 • Assembled and painted; nothing to do but set it on the stand
 • Mann Lake's own note: the supers can take up to two seasons to be drawn, so this is two years of woodenware
 • Matching parts for a decade

Cons

 • $200 more than the Amazon four-box kits
 • Sold direct; linked to the maker
 • Plain pine under the paint

Mann Lake's Traditional Growing Apiary Kit is listed at $346.99 to $389.99 with two assembled deep hive bodies, two supers, forty frames with foundation, a telescoping cover, an inner cover, a bottom board and an entrance reducer, painted. Mann Lake's own description notes it can take up to two seasons for a new colony to draw out the supers. It is the kit for someone who wants it done, from the supplier whose 10-frame deep is stated at 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 inches outside.

7

Best add-on deep (8-frame)

BeeCastle 8-Frame Deep Box with Frames, Wax Coated

A single 8-frame deep with eight frames and waxed foundation for $44, the box an 8-frame colony needs by midsummer.

Contents
1 deep box, 8 frames with waxed foundation (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Beeswax coated cedar (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Deep height 9 5/8 in (per the Amazon listing)
Frame size
8-frame; the matching medium with frames is $50

Pros

 • Box and frames in one order
 • Beeswax coated
 • The medium version is the honey super

Cons

 • Listing figures only
 • Unassembled
 • 8-frame only; MayBee's 10-frame medium is the 10-frame equivalent

BeeCastle's 8-frame deep box with eight frames is listed at $43.99 in beeswax-coated cedar; its 8-frame medium with eight frames is $49.99. Oregon State's PNW 744 priced an unassembled deep box alone at about $13 and frames at $2.23 to $2.51 each at the suppliers it surveyed, so a box with frames and foundation for $44 is in line. These are the boxes that turn a one-deep kit into a hive.

8

Best frame pack

BeeCastle 10-Pack Deep Frames with Wax Foundation

Ten deep frames with waxed foundation for $41, for the spare box, the nuc transfer and the frames that break.

Contents
10 frames with waxed foundation (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Pine frames, waxed plastic foundation (per the Amazon listing)
Stated dimensions
Deep, 19 x 9 1/8 in standard (per the Amazon listing)
Frame size
Fits 8- and 10-frame deeps

Pros

 • Frames fit any maker's deep
 • About $4 a frame; MayBee's 10-pack is $30
 • Spare frames are what you need when a nuc arrives on five

Cons

 • Listing figures only
 • Deep only; buy medium frames for mediums
 • Unassembled

BeeCastle's 10-pack of deep frames with waxed foundation is listed at $40.99; the MayBee 10-pack is $29.87. Frames are the one Langstroth part that is the same everywhere: 19 inches long, 9 1/8 deep or 6 1/4 medium (Hoover, Betterbee), so a frame pack fits any box here. Keep ten spare; a nuc comes on four or five frames (Penn State) and the rest of the box has to be filled the same day.

How we chose

Kits were judged on contents, on whether the listing or maker states the outside dimensions, on finish and on price, with maker figures preferred and listing figures marked. Add-on boxes and frames were judged on the same, plus whether the frames come with foundation. Prices are what the maker or Amazon showed on October 9, 2026.

Buying guide

Count the boxes against the season

A package or nuc goes into one deep; the colony needs a second brood box as it grows and a honey super in its second season (Mann Lake's note that drawing two supers can take two seasons). Two deeps and a medium (Hoover, Galena) is the first two years; four boxes (Honey Lake, Mann Lake Growing Apiary) is the first three. One-deep kits are fine if you buy the second box at the same time.

Frames with foundation

Every kit here ships frames with wax-coated plastic foundation, which Oregon State's survey priced at about $2.31 to $2.51 a frame assembled. Plastic foundation is the norm for a first hive; wax foundation and foundationless frames are choices for later. Frame packs are the cheapest Langstroth part to keep spare.

Covers and bottom board

Telescoping top with an inner cover is standard; a metal-capped top (MayBee, Galena) lasts longer in rain. Solid bottom boards come with the Amazon kits; a screened bottom board (BeeCastle $70, Honey Lake $35) is the common upgrade for Varroa drop monitoring and beetle oil trays.

Assembly

Every Amazon kit is unassembled: dovetails, pre-drilled holes and screws or nails, plus frames to nail. Budget an evening. Supplier kits add $100 to $200 for assembly. Painting is covered in the coating guide; the wax-coated kits skip it.

What to skip

Skip a kit whose listing gives no dimensions if you already own boxes from another maker, unless you will measure. Skip mixing 8-frame and 10-frame parts; Hoover states outright that its two widths do not interchange. And skip "Langstroth" kits with non-standard frame counts (7, 9) unless you plan to buy every future part from the same seller.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a Langstroth hive kit?

Boxes (deeps and mediums), frames with foundation, a bottom board with entrance reducer, an inner cover and a telescoping top; some add a queen excluder. Tools, gear, feeders and bees are separate. Our starter kit guide covers the kits that include tools.

Are all Langstroth hives the same size?

The standard is 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 inches outside for 10-frame boxes and 14 by 19 7/8 for 8-frame, with deeps 9 5/8 inches tall and mediums 6 5/8 (Mann Lake, Hoover, Oregon State Extension). Frames are 19 inches long. Makers that state those figures are interchangeable; measure any that do not.

Should I buy a complete kit or boxes one at a time?

A complete kit with two or more boxes is cheaper per box than singles and covers the first season. Buy singles (BeeCastle, MayBee, $44 to $50 with frames) when the colony outgrows the kit.

Do Amazon Langstroth kits fit Mann Lake or Dadant parts?

The ones that state standard dimensions (Hoover, BeeCastle, MayBee within a tenth of an inch) do. Honey Lake and POLLIBEE state none; measure a box before stacking it on another maker's.

How many frames do I need?

Ten per 10-frame box or eight per 8-frame box, and ten spare deep frames for the day a nuc arrives on five. Frame packs run $30 to $41 for ten with foundation.

Is a painted or beeswax-coated kit better?

Both protect the wood. Beeswax-coated kits (Honey Lake, Hoover, BeeCastle, MayBee) need no finishing; painted pine (Mann Lake, Dadant, Galena) needs low-VOC exterior latex on the outside only, per Betterbee's and Mann Lake's painting guides.
