Best Beehives for Beginners (2026): Langstroth Woodenware for a First Colony

The beehive to buy first is a standard 10-frame Langstroth with two deeps and a medium, and the one that gets it right for the least money and the least work is the Hoover Hives Gold Standard: beeswax-dipped, thirty frames on wax-coated foundation, industry-standard dimensions, about $155. If you want four boxes from the start, the Honey Lake 10-frame complete hive adds a second medium and a queen excluder for $152. For a plain pine hive from a supplier whose parts you will buy for years, Mann Lake's Traditional Complete Hive Kit ($162.99 assembled, one deep) and Galena Farms' Amish-made Busy Bees kit ($199, two deeps and a medium) are the ones.

A beginner's hive has to be three things: standard, so every later box fits; big enough for a colony's first two seasons; and finished, so it does not rot. Every pick is judged on those from the maker's or listing's own figures, and the width comparison and coating guide explain the two decisions that come first.

1

Best overall

Hoover Hives Gold Standard 10-Frame Beehive Kit (2 deeps, 1 medium, beeswax dipped)

Two deeps, a medium, thirty frames and the covers, dipped in beeswax, at standard dimensions, for about $155.

Boxes
2 deep (9 5/8 in), 1 medium (6 5/8 in), 10-frame
Frames
20 deep and 10 medium wood frames with wax-coated plastic foundation
Finish
Dipped in natural beeswax (Hoover)
Dimensions
Boxes 16 1/4 x 19 7/8 in; deep frames 19 x 9 1/8 in (Hoover)
Also
Inner cover, fir bottom board, entrance reducer; telescoping cover and excluder per the listing
Assembly
Unassembled with screws; assembled option from Hoover

Pros

  • The two-deep, one-medium configuration Oregon State lists as the common Pacific Northwest setup
  • Nothing to paint
  • Hoover states its 10-frame parts interchange with other makers' 10-frame hives

Cons

  • Hoover does not name the box wood species; only the bottom board is stated as fir
  • Unassembled
  • No warranty term

Hoover's Gold Standard is the kit in our starter kit guide, and as a hive it is the configuration the extension guides describe: Oregon State's equipment fact sheet gives two deeps, or a deep and a medium, as the common brood chamber, with mediums above for honey. Hoover's parts list and dimensions are on its page; the beeswax dip means the boxes go out the day they are screwed together.

The thing to know is the wood: Hoover's pages state the finish and the fir bottom board but not the species of the boxes. BeeCastle and MayBee state cedar for their boxes and pine for frames; Galena Farms states eastern white pine for its Busy Bees line. For a dipped box the species matters less than for a painted one, because the wax, not the wood, keeps the water out.

2

Best four-box hive

Honey Lake 10-Frame Complete Hive (2 deeps, 2 mediums, 40 frames)

Two deeps and two mediums with forty frames, an excluder and the covers for $152: a full second season's woodenware in one box.

Boxes
2 deep, 2 medium, 10-frame (per the Amazon listing)
Frames
40 wood frames with 40 wax-dipped plastic foundation sheets (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Beeswax coated cedar, dovetail joints, pre-drilled (per the Amazon listing)
Also
Top and inner cover, queen excluder, solid bottom board, entrance reducer (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Four boxes and forty frames: nothing to buy until the third season
  • Queen excluder included
  • Cedar stated as the box wood

Cons

  • Honey Lake has no specification page we could find; listing figures
  • Four boxes in the first year is more than a package will fill; store two
  • Unassembled

Honey Lake's 10-Frame Langstroth Beehive Starter Kit is listed with two deep brood boxes, two medium supers, forty wood frames with forty pre-waxed plastic foundation sheets, a top cover, an inner cover, a queen excluder, a solid bottom board and an entrance reducer, in cedar with dovetail joints and pre-drilled holes, beeswax coated. We found no Honey Lake specification page.

It is the hive for someone who wants to buy once. Mann Lake's note that a colony can take two seasons to draw out two supers applies: in year one the second medium sits in the garage, which is fine. The listing's dimensions are not stated, so measure a box against a known 10-frame part before mixing makers, as Oregon State advises.

3

Best deep-plus-medium hive

MayBee 10-Frame Starter Hive (1 deep, 1 medium, wax-coated cedar)

A deep and a medium in wax-coated cedar with pine frames, a metal-capped cover and a vented inner cover for $133, the lightest standard configuration.

Boxes
1 deep (19.9 x 16.3 x 9.5 in), 1 medium (19.9 x 16.3 x 6.6 in), 10-frame (per the Amazon listing)
Frames
20 pine frames with beeswaxed food-grade plastic foundation (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Heavy wax-coated cedar (per the Amazon listing)
Also
Pre-assembled metal top cover, vented inner cover, bottom board with entrance reducer (per the Amazon listing)
Height
20 in for the two-box hive (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Deep plus medium is Oregon State's second common brood configuration and lighter to work than two deeps
  • Metal-capped cover and vented inner cover
  • MayBee sells matching medium supers for $49.99 with frames

Cons

  • Listing figures only; no MayBee specification page we could read
  • A colony in a deep-and-medium brood nest still needs a super by midsummer
  • Unassembled; the 8-frame version is $110

MayBee's 10 Frame Starter Kit is listed with one deep brood box (19.9 by 16.3 by 9.5 inches) and one medium super (19.9 by 16.3 by 6.6 inches), twenty pine frames with beeswaxed plastic foundation, a pre-assembled metal-capped top cover, a vented inner cover and a bottom board with entrance reducer, in heavy wax-coated cedar with dovetail joints; the whole two-box hive stands 20 inches. MayBee's 10-frame medium super with ten frames is $49.99, which is the way to add the honey box.

Deep-and-medium is the configuration for someone who finds a full deep heavy but does not want to go all-medium: Betterbee's heavy-box article offers both routes. It also matches Mann Lake's deep-and-super starter kits.

4

Best beeswax-soaked boxes

BeeCastle 10-Frame Langstroth Hive, Beeswax Coated

BeeCastle's boxes are soaked in boiled beeswax rather than brushed, in cedar with pine frames, at standard dimensions stated on the listing.

Boxes
Deep (16 1/4 x 19 7/8 x 9 5/8 in) and medium (16 1/4 x 19 7/8 x 6 5/8 in) 10-frame; count per the variant listed
Frames
Pine frames with waxed foundation (per the Amazon listing)
Finish
Fully soaked in boiled beeswax, cedar, dovetail joints, pre-drilled (per the Amazon listing)

Pros

  • The listing states the standard 10-frame dimensions
  • Soaking rather than coating, per BeeCastle's description
  • BeeCastle also sells single 8-frame deeps ($44) and mediums ($50) with frames

Cons

  • BeeCastle's own site is not findable; every figure is from listings
  • The $144 and $186 variants differ in box count; read the title
  • Unassembled

BeeCastle's 10-frame Langstroth hive is listed with deep boxes of 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 by 9 5/8 inches and medium boxes of 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 by 6 5/8 inches, cedar with pine frames and waxed foundation, dovetail joints, pre-drilled holes, and boxes fully soaked in boiled beeswax so the wax penetrates the wood. The $144 listing and the $186 listing are different box counts; both carry the same construction notes. We could not find a BeeCastle website, so every figure here is from the listings.

It is the Hoover alternative when Hoover is out of stock, and its 8-frame boxes (deep $43.99, medium $49.99, each with eight frames) are the cheapest way to build an 8-frame hive a box at a time.

5

Best assembled supplier hive

Mann Lake Traditional Complete Hive Kit, 10-Frame, Assembled

One assembled 10-frame deep with assembled frames and covers from Mann Lake for $162.99 to $169.99, the start of a hive you will add to from the same catalogue.

Boxes
1 assembled 9 5/8 in deep, 10-frame
Frames
Assembled frames with beeswax-coated plastic foundation
Finish
Unpainted pine; entrance reducer and notched inner cover unpainted (Mann Lake)
Also
Assembled telescoping cover with notched inner cover, assembled bottom board with reducer
Price
$162.99 to $169.99 at Mann Lake

Pros

  • Assembled; frames assembled too
  • Mann Lake's 10-frame commercial deep is stated at 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 inches outside
  • The Growing Apiary kit ($346.99 to $389.99) adds a second deep and two supers, painted

Cons

  • One deep; a second is $60 to $80 more
  • Needs exterior latex on the outside before the bees (Mann Lake's painting tips)
  • No warranty term

Mann Lake's Traditional Complete Hive Kit (10-frame) is listed at $162.99 to $169.99 with one assembled 9 5/8 inch deep hive body with assembled frames on plastic-coated beeswax foundation, an assembled telescoping cover with notched inner cover and an assembled bottom board with reducer; the entrance reducer and inner cover are not painted. Mann Lake's Traditional Growing Apiary Kit ($346.99 to $389.99) is the full two-deep, two-super version, painted, with twenty deep and twenty medium frames.

It is the hive for someone who wants a supplier with a catalogue, a painting guide and matching parts for a decade, and who would rather paint than dip. Mann Lake's painting tips and Betterbee's guide agree: low-VOC exterior latex, outside only.

6

Best American-made pine hive

Galena Farms Busy Bees 'N' More 10-Frame Kit (2 deeps, 1 medium)

An Amish-made eastern white pine hive with two deeps, a medium, a screened bottom board and an aluminum-capped cover for $199, unassembled and unpainted.

Boxes
2 deep, 1 medium, 10-frame
Frames
30 frames with wax-coated foundation (Galena Farms)
Finish
Unpainted eastern white pine, Amish-made (Galena Farms)
Also
Telescoping cover capped with white aluminum, inner cover, plastic queen excluder, entrance reducer, screened bottom board with insert
Price
$199 at Galena Farms

Pros

  • Screened bottom board with insert, which the dipped kits do not include
  • Eastern white pine named as the wood
  • Galena Farms also sells Hoover and NuBee hives, so one checkout covers the alternatives

Cons

  • Unassembled and unpainted
  • Sold direct, not on Amazon; linked to the maker
  • Galena's pages show sale and regular prices that move

Galena Farms' Busy Bees 'N' More 10-frame kit (two deeps, one medium) is listed at $199 with thirty frames and wax-coated foundations, a telescoping top cover capped with white aluminum, an inner cover, a plastic queen excluder, an entrance reducer and a screened bottom board with insert, in Amish-made eastern white pine, assembly required. The screened bottom board is the feature the Amazon kits lack; it is the base of several small hive beetle oil traps (see the beetle trap guide) and of Varroa drop monitoring.

Galena also sells the Hoover Gold Standard ($149 on sale) and NuBee's painted, assembled single deep ($119), so its site is worth a look whichever hive you choose. Paint the pine before the bees.

7

Best for cold winters

Betterbee Basic BeeMax Polystyrene Beginner Kit

A polystyrene hive rated R 6.5 by Betterbee, against about R 1.2 for wood, in a beginner kit with tools and gear for $267.

Boxes
1 BeeMax polystyrene 10-frame deep
Frames
10 plastic frames with foundation
Finish
Polystyrene, painted by you; R-value 6.5 (Betterbee)
Also
Outer cover, inner cover, bottom board, smoker, hive tool, gloves, veil, book
Price
$267 at Betterbee

Pros

  • Betterbee's stated R 6.5 against about R 1.2 for a wooden hive
  • Light to lift
  • Kit includes the tools and gear

Cons

  • BeeMax parts fit BeeMax; mixing with wood is awkward (different wall thickness)
  • Polystyrene must be painted and can be chewed by the bees at the edges
  • One deep

Betterbee's Basic BeeMax Beginner Unassembled Hive Kit is listed at $267 with a 10-frame BeeMax polystyrene deep hive body, an outer cover, an inner cover, ten plastic frames, a bottom board, a smoker, a hive tool, gloves, a veil and a beekeeping book. Betterbee rates the BeeMax polystyrene at an R-value of 6.5 and, in a separate article, puts a wooden hive at around R 1.2 and polystyrene at around R 6.

Insulation is the argument in Minnesota, Maine or the mountain West, where winter cluster size and feed consumption decide survival. The trade is a hive system of its own: BeeMax boxes stack with BeeMax boxes, and the coating guide covers painting polystyrene. The seasonal guide covers the winter side.

How we chose

We listed hives whose contents, dimensions and finish are stated by the maker (Hoover, Mann Lake, Galena Farms, Betterbee) or, failing that, in full on the listing (Honey Lake, MayBee, BeeCastle), marked as such. We judged each on the configuration against the extension guides' descriptions of a brood chamber, on standard dimensions, on the frames and foundation, on the finish and on price. Hives sold with automatic honey frames are covered in the Flow comparison.

Buying guide

Configuration

Oregon State's PNW 744 describes the common brood chamber as two deeps or one deep and one medium, with one to several honey supers above. For a first colony: a deep to install the package or nuc, a second brood box as the nest grows, a medium for honey in the second season. Kits with two deeps and a medium (Hoover, Galena Busy Bees, Mann Lake's Growing Apiary) are the whole first two years; single-deep kits (Mann Lake Traditional, Betterbee, Dadant) need a second box by midsummer.

Standard dimensions

10-frame boxes are 16 1/4 by 19 7/8 inches outside (Mann Lake, Hoover, Oregon State); deep boxes 9 5/8 inches tall, mediums 6 5/8. Frames are 19 inches long by 9 1/8 (deep) or 6 1/4 (medium). A maker that states those numbers (Hoover, BeeCastle, Mann Lake) is a maker whose boxes will stack with the next ones you buy. Oregon State's advice is to measure before mixing suppliers.

Finish

Beeswax-dipped boxes (Hoover, Honey Lake, MayBee, BeeCastle) need nothing. Pine boxes (Mann Lake, Galena, Dadant, Betterbee) are painted on the outside only with low-VOC exterior latex, never inside, never the frames or inner cover (Betterbee's guide, UF/IFAS's 4-H manual), and cured before the bees. Polystyrene (BeeMax) is painted and insulates at R 6.5 (Betterbee). The coating guide has the detail.

Frames and foundation

Wood frames with wax-coated plastic foundation (Hoover, Honey Lake, MayBee, BeeCastle, Mann Lake) are the standard; Oregon State's survey priced assembled wooden deep frames at about $2.51 and plastic frames at $2.31. Betterbee's kit uses one-piece plastic frames. All take the same extractor baskets.

Bottom board

Solid bottom boards come with most kits; Galena's Busy Bees kit includes a screened bottom board with insert, which doubles as a mite-drop monitor and a base for beetle oil trays. Either works; screened is the easier upgrade later from BeeCastle or Honey Lake at $35 to $70.

What to skip

Skip hives with no stated dimensions unless the price is low enough to risk a box that does not stack. Skip mixing 8-frame and 10-frame. Skip decorative hives with no standard frames; a nuc comes on Langstroth frames (Michigan State) and has to go somewhere (the hive type comparison covers top bar and Warré hives). And skip buying the hive before a bee school; Oregon State's sequence is course, then bees, then the equipment the course tells you to buy.

Frequently asked questions

What type of beehive is best for beginners?

A 10-frame Langstroth with two deeps and a medium: the configuration Oregon State Extension describes as common, the width Dadant calls the industry standard, and the one every supplier, nuc seller and club extractor supports. Hoover Hives' beeswax-dipped Gold Standard is the best-value version.

Should a beginner buy a beeswax-dipped or painted hive?

Dipped boxes (Hoover, Honey Lake, MayBee, BeeCastle) need no finishing and go out the day they are assembled. Painted pine (Mann Lake, Dadant, Galena, Betterbee) needs low-VOC exterior latex on the outside only and a cure of a week to a month per Betterbee's guide. Both last; dipped saves the work.

How many boxes should a beginner hive have?

A deep to install the bees, a second brood box as the colony grows, and a medium super in the second season; Mann Lake notes a colony can take up to two seasons to draw out the supers. Two deeps plus a medium covers the first two years.

Are Amazon beehive kits any good?

The Hoover Hives kit sold on Amazon is Hoover's own product with a specification page. Honey Lake, MayBee and BeeCastle state standard dimensions and beeswax finishes on their listings but have no maker pages we could find; their boxes are widely used, and the way to check one is to measure it against a known 10-frame part.

Is a polystyrene hive better for beginners?

In cold climates it insulates far better: Betterbee rates its BeeMax at R 6.5 against about R 1.2 for wood. It is a system of its own (BeeMax stacks with BeeMax) and must be painted. For most of the US a wooden hive is the simpler start.

Does the hive come with bees?

No. Order a package or nuc separately, the fall before (Penn State Extension); nucs come on Langstroth frames that fit any hive here (Michigan State Extension).
