Small hive beetle traps work because bees chase beetles into small spaces: a slim trough hung between two frames at the edge of the top box, with oil in it, catches the beetles the bees herd there. The Foxhound 12-pack ($22; two traps between the outside frames on each side of the top box, per Foxhound) is the pick, from a US bee supply company whose own page sells the same traps as the Beetle Jail; the Beetle Blaster 12-pack ($10) and the TIHOOD 12-pack ($14) are the generic versions. A screened bottom board with an oil tray under it (the BeeCastle two-pack, $70, and the Honey Lake board, $35, both 16 1/4 by 22 by 2 9/16 inches) is the other trap the University of Florida's beetle guide counts among its in-hive designs.
UF/IFAS's small hive beetle publication (IN854) is the reference for everything here: at least five in-hive trap designs, apple cider vinegar with mineral oil as a bait and kill, and an integrated approach of strong colonies, clean yards and traps. Trap dimensions are the listings'; prices are from October 9, 2026.

Best in-frame trap
Foxhound Small Hive Beetle Traps, 12-Pack
Twelve disposable in-frame oil traps from a US bee supply company, two per side of the top box, $22.
- Type
- In-frame oil trap, hangs between top bars
- Pack
- 12; Foxhound: enough for up to 6 hives
- Fill
- Oil (per the Amazon listing); Foxhound's page: vegetable oil, half full
- Placement
- Two traps between the two outside frames on each side of the top box (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Placement instructions from the seller
- Foxhound's own page sells the same at $19.99 to $25 for twelve
- No tools to install
Cons
- Disposable; they fill with dead beetles and oil
- Two per side per hive is four a hive, so twelve is three hives, not six, by that count
- Listing figures only
Foxhound's traps are listed as a 12-pack of disposable small hive beetle traps that hang between frames, with the instruction to place two between the two outside frames on both sides of the top box, where beetles herded by the bees fall into the oil. Foxhound's own site sells the Beetle Jail at $25 for twelve, the Beetle Blaster at $19.99 for twelve (half-filled with vegetable oil, two to four per box) and an oil pan trap at $16.99. Check and replace the traps at each inspection.
Best budget
Beetle Blaster Plastic Hive Beetle Traps, 12-Pack
Twelve 9-inch plastic Beetle Blaster troughs for mineral or vegetable oil, $10.
- Type
- In-frame oil trap
- Pack
- 12
- Fill
- Mineral oil, vegetable oil or slaked lime (per the Amazon listing)
- Size
- 9.06 x 1.57 x 1.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Under a dollar a trap
- Same pattern as Foxhound's Beetle Blaster
- Fill options listed
Cons
- Unbranded (Kasteco)
- Thin plastic; handle full ones carefully
- Listing figures only
Kasteco's Beetle Blaster pack lists twelve plastic traps at 9.06 by 1.57 by 1.5 inches, filled with mineral oil, vegetable oil or slaked lime. The 9-inch length spans the gap between two deep frames' top bars; the trap hangs by its lips. Half-fill with oil (Foxhound's instruction for the same design) so a trap tipped on removal does not pour oil onto the comb.
Best slim trap
TIHOOD Small Hive Beetle Traps, 12-Pack
Twelve 7-inch white traps, 1.18 inches wide, for tight frame spacing, $14.
- Type
- In-frame oil trap
- Pack
- 12
- Fill
- Not stated; oil, as for the type
- Size
- 7.08 x 1.18 x 0.39 in (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Slimmer than the Beetle Blaster for tight bee space
- White, easy to see when full
- Twelve
Cons
- The listing says almost nothing else
- Shallow at 0.39 in; less oil
- Listing figures only
TIHOOD's traps are listed at 7.08 by 1.18 by 0.39 inches, white, twelve to a pack, and the listing says little more. The slim profile suits frames pushed tight together; the shallow trough holds less oil and fills faster.
Best screened bottom boards
BeeCastle Screened Bottom Boards, 10-Frame, 2-Pack
Two beeswax-dipped 10-frame screened bottom boards, 16 1/4 by 22 by 2 9/16 inches, assembled, FSC wood, $70.

- Pack
- 2
- Fill
- An oil tray or sticky board in the slot (not included)
- Size
- 16 1/4 x 22 x 2 9/16 in, 10-frame (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Standard Langstroth dimensions stated
- Assembled, beeswax coated
- Doubles as a Varroa drop board
Cons
- Two boards is two hives; buy one from Honey Lake if you have one
- No tray included
- Listing figures only
BeeCastle's two-pack lists 10-frame screened bottom boards at 16 1/4 by 22 by 2 9/16 inches, beeswax coated, fully assembled, in FSC-certified wood. A screened bottom board with an oil tray in its slot is one of UF/IFAS's in-hive trap designs: beetles and mites that fall through the screen land in the oil. Without a tray it is a ventilated floor.
Best single screened board
Honey Lake 10-Frame Screened Bottom Board with Metal Insert
One cedar, beeswax-dipped 10-frame screened bottom board with a removable metal insert and entrance reducer, $35.
- Type
- Screened bottom board
- Pack
- 1
- Fill
- Removable metal insert; oil tray in the slot (per the Amazon listing)
- Size
- 16 1/4 x 22 x 2 9/16 in, 10-frame (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Metal insert included
- Cedar, dipped in beeswax
- Entrance reducer included
Cons
- Insert is a drop board, not an oil tray; oil goes in a tray you supply
- Listing figures only
- 10-frame only
Honey Lake's board is listed at 16 1/4 by 22 by 2 9/16 inches in cedar dipped in beeswax, with a removable metal insert, woven wire mesh, an entrance reducer and assembly done. The insert is for monitoring drop; for beetles, a shallow tray of oil in the slot does the work.
How we chose
Traps were judged on type, pack size, stated dimensions, fill and price on October 9, 2026, from the listings and Foxhound's site; the management advice is UF/IFAS's (IN854) and nothing else.
What UF/IFAS says
Small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) larvae ruin comb and ferment honey; adults hide where bees cannot reach them. UF/IFAS's publication describes at least five in-hive trap designs, all working on the same principle (a small space the bees herd beetles into, with oil or a bait), gives apple cider vinegar with a little mineral oil as a bait and kill, and recommends integrated management: strong colonies that can patrol every frame, no more boxes than the bees cover, clean yards with no comb or cappings left out, dry ground (larvae pupate in soil), and traps. Chemical controls exist and are not reviewed here.
Where traps go
Beetles run from bees to the edges and corners. Foxhound's instruction is two traps between the two outside frames on each side of the top box; Foxhound's own page says two to four Beetle Blasters per box. A screened bottom board with an oil tray catches what the bees drop. Check traps at each inspection; a full trap is a trap that is not working.
What goes in the trap
| Fill | Source | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetable oil, half full | Foxhound (Beetle Blaster) | Cheap; half full so it does not spill on removal |
| Mineral oil | Kasteco listing; UF/IFAS (with vinegar) | Does not go rancid |
| Apple cider vinegar with a little mineral oil | UF/IFAS | Bait and kill in one |
| Slaked lime | Kasteco listing | Dry alternative |
Comparison
| Trap | Type | Size | Pack | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foxhound traps | In-frame | Not stated | 12 | $22 |
| Beetle Blaster (Kasteco) | In-frame | 9.06 x 1.57 x 1.5 in | 12 | $10 |
| TIHOOD | In-frame | 7.08 x 1.18 x 0.39 in | 12 | $14 |
| BeeCastle screened board | Bottom board | 16 1/4 x 22 x 2 9/16 in | 2 | $70 |
| Honey Lake screened board | Bottom board | 16 1/4 x 22 x 2 9/16 in | 1 | $35 |
What to skip
Skip traps as the only answer to a weak colony; UF/IFAS's first tool is a strong colony on no more comb than it covers. Skip leaving supers of wet frames in a shed in the South; that is where beetles breed. And skip any trap you will not check; a full trap of oil and beetles tipped onto brood is worse than no trap.
Frequently asked questions
How do small hive beetle traps work?
Bees herd beetles into small spaces; a slim trough hung between frames with oil in it catches them there. UF/IFAS describes at least five in-hive designs on this principle. Foxhound's instruction is two traps between the outside frames on each side of the top box.
What oil goes in a beetle trap?
Vegetable oil, half full (Foxhound), or mineral oil; UF/IFAS gives apple cider vinegar with a little mineral oil as a bait and kill. Half full so a trap tipped on removal does not spill on the comb.
How many beetle traps per hive?
Foxhound says two between the outside frames on each side of the top box (four a hive); its own page says two to four Beetle Blasters per box. A 12-pack is three hives by the first count.
Does a screened bottom board stop hive beetles?
With an oil tray under the screen it is one of UF/IFAS's in-hive traps, catching beetles and mites the bees drop. Without a tray it is a ventilated floor.
What is the best way to control small hive beetles?
UF/IFAS's integrated approach: strong colonies on no more comb than they cover, clean yards, dry ground, and traps. Chemical controls exist and are outside this guide.
How often should I check beetle traps?
At every inspection. A trap full of oil and beetles has stopped working and can spill onto brood when it is lifted out.
