Where to Buy Bees and Beekeeping Equipment: Packages, Nucs and Suppliers

Affiliate disclosure: product links on this page go to Amazon, or to the maker's own store for brands that sell only direct. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you; a link to a maker's store earns us nothing. No retailer or brand sees our picks before they are published or has any say in them. How we choose.

Bees come from three places: a supplier that ships packages (Mann Lake's California Russian-Carniolan package with a vaccinated queen was $185.95 on October 9, 2026), a supplier you drive to (Betterbee sells three-pound packages and five-frame nucs for pickup only in upstate New York and does not ship them), or a local beekeeper or club, which is what the University of Georgia and Michigan State recommend. Order the fall before (Penn State); packages sell out. Equipment comes from the four suppliers in our supplier comparison or from Amazon, where the Hoover Hives kit is the same product Galena Farms sells; the Dadant Beginner's Kit and Galena's Busy Bees kit are the supplier picks.

Vaccinated (Mann Lake's listing)

Pros

  • A supplier with a catalogue and a phone line
  • Vaccinated queen (Mann Lake's listing)
  • Order in fall for spring

Cons

  • Package, not nuc: no comb, no stores, feed heavily (Penn State)
  • Shipping terms and dates are on the product page and change by season
  • Price read once; check the current list

Mann Lake's search listed one package product on October 9, 2026: California Russian-Carniolan package bees with a vaccinated queen at $185.95. Package weight, pickup and shipping terms and the spring dates are on the product page and change each season, so treat the figure as the day's price. Penn State's description applies to any package: no comb, no stores, a caged queen, feed heavily from the first hour (the installation guide).

2

Hive, from Amazon

Hoover Hives Gold Standard 10-Frame Beehive Kit (2 deeps, 1 medium, beeswax dipped)

The Hoover Gold Standard on Amazon is sold by Galena Farms, Hoover's own retailer, so it is the supplier product with Amazon's shipping.

Sells

Pros

  • Same product as Galena's site
  • Hoover's spec page
  • Shipping included in the Amazon price

Cons

  • Unassembled
  • No tools
  • No warranty term

Heavy woodenware is where Amazon's shipping beats the suppliers'; Hoover's 32-pound kit ships free with Prime, while a supplier order of the same weight shows its freight at checkout (Dadant's banner offered free shipping over $150 when read). The hives guide covers the rest.

Everything but bees, from a supplier

Dadant 10-Frame Beginner's Kit #1

Dadant's Beginner's Kit #1 is the one order that includes the hive, tools, veil, gloves, feeder and a book, $226.95.

Sells

Also
Dadant sells bees seasonally; its search did not return a package listing when we looked

Pros

  • One order
  • Veil, gloves and book
  • The oldest supplier

Cons

  • Unassembled
  • One deep
  • Dadant's site returned no bees page to our search on October 9, 2026

Dadant's kit is in the starter kit guide. Its site search for package bees returned a not-found page when we looked, which is normal for a seasonal product in October; the catalogue lists bees in late winter.

4

Woodenware, cheapest

Galena Farms Busy Bees 'N' More 10-Frame Kit (2 deeps, 1 medium)

Galena Farms' Amish-made two-deep, one-medium kit at $199, with Hoover and NuBee under the same roof.

  • Prices move with sales

Galena is the woodenware store; the supplier comparison puts it beside the three full-catalogue suppliers.

Bees

Packages

Two, three or five pounds of bees with a caged queen and a can of syrup; Penn State calls the 3-pound package the best buy, about 10,000 workers. Shipped by some suppliers (Mann Lake), pickup only at others (Betterbee). Order the fall before (Penn State).

Nucs

Four or five frames of comb, brood, stores and a laying queen; more expensive and easier (Penn State). On Langstroth frames from most suppliers (Michigan State), so check deep versus medium and your frame width. Betterbee's are pickup only in Greenwich, New York, spring or overwintered. Local clubs are where most nucs change hands.

Local bees

UGA: buy two established colonies locally. Michigan State: join a club first and buy from a local supplier. A local nuc is adapted to the climate, inspected before purchase, and comes with a beekeeper's phone number. The club is also the extractor, the mentor and the swarm list.

Registration

Pennsylvania requires registration of any apiary (Penn State); Florida of any number of colonies (UF/IFAS); Oregon at five or more colonies (Oregon State); Michigan has no state registration but city ordinances and HOA rules apply (Michigan State). Those were the four we started with; our beehive registration rules for all 50 states give every state's deadline and fee, each linked to its law. Registration is also how the state inspector finds you when a disease is reported nearby, which is in your interest.

What to skip

Skip bees from a classified ad with no inspection. Skip buying equipment before the bee school tells you which (Oregon State's order: course, then bees, then equipment). And skip waiting until spring to order bees.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy bees?

From a supplier that ships packages (Mann Lake listed a package with a vaccinated queen at $185.95 on October 9, 2026), a supplier you drive to (Betterbee: packages and nucs, pickup only in upstate New York), or a local beekeeper or club, which UGA and Michigan State recommend.

When should I order bees?

The fall before the spring you want them (Penn State Extension). Packages and nucs sell out; suppliers post dates in late winter.

Package or nuc?

A nuc costs more and is easier: comb, brood, stores and a laying queen already in place (Penn State). A package fits any hive and must be fed heavily. Local nucs through a club are the extension services' preference.

Do suppliers ship nucs?

Betterbee does not ship packages or nucs; they are pickup only. Mann Lake's terms are on its product page. Most nucs are bought locally through clubs.

Is it cheaper to buy equipment on Amazon or from a supplier?

For heavy woodenware, Amazon's shipping usually wins (Hoover's 32-pound kit is about $155 delivered; the same kit is $199 at Galena before a sale). For tools, feeders and extractors the suppliers are competitive and have parts and support.

Do I have to register as a beekeeper?

In Pennsylvania and Florida, yes, for any apiary; in Oregon at five or more colonies; in Michigan no (sources: the extension services). Other states vary; check the state apiarist.
