A hive tool is a flat steel bar with a bevelled end for prying boxes apart and scraping, and the J hook version adds a hook at the other end to lever the first frame up. The KINGLAKE 10 1/2-inch J hook ($5.49, 304 stainless, painted red so it is findable in grass) is the one to own; the KINGLAKE 10-inch standard tool ($8.69) is the flat pattern with a nail-pulling slot; the Sunshane two-pack ($7.99) puts a J hook in each pocket. The WEICHUAN frame grip ($7.99) lifts a frame one-handed with beech jaws and a stainless spring; the Acostop horsehair brush ($9.99) is the bee brush. Mann Lake's 9 1/2-inch stainless tool ($15.99) and J frame lifter ($9.99) and Dadant's painted spring-steel tools are the supplier versions.
Length, steel and price are the comparison; the listings supply the first two and we say when they do not. Prices are Amazon's and the suppliers' on October 9, 2026.

Best overall
KINGLAKE 10-1/2-inch J Hook Hive Tool, 304 Stainless
A 10 1/2-inch J hook in 304 stainless, painted red, for $5.49.
- Length
- 10 1/2 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Steel
- 304 stainless, painted red (per the Amazon listing)
- Type
- J hook frame lifter and scraper
- Weight
- 3.68 oz (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- The J hook lifts the first frame without a grip
- Red paint shows up in grass
- 304 stainless stated
Cons
- Paint wears off the blade in a season
- No nail slot
- Listing figures only
KINGLAKE's J hook is listed at 10 1/2 inches in 304 stainless steel painted red, with a sharp scraping edge and the hook for levering a frame up by its lug. The hook is the reason most beekeepers carry this pattern: the first frame in a full box has no room to be grasped, and the hook lifts it enough to get fingers under the lugs. At $5.49 buy two; one lives in the smoker box.
Best standard tool
KINGLAKE 10-inch Stainless Hive Scraper Tool
The flat 10-inch pattern in polished 304 stainless with a hanging hole, $8.69.
- Length
- 10 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Steel
- 304 stainless, polished (per the Amazon listing)
- Type
- Standard (flat) hive tool with hanging hole
- Weight
- 1.6 oz (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- The flat pattern pries boxes apart with less leverage on the wood
- Hanging hole
- No paint to wear off
Cons
- No hook; pair it with a frame grip
- Light, which some find flexes
- Listing figures only
KINGLAKE's standard tool is listed at 10 inches in polished 304 stainless with a hanging hole. The flat pattern (Mann Lake calls its version the 9 1/2-inch stainless hive tool, $15.99; Dadant's is painted US spring steel) is the one for separating propolized boxes, because the bevelled end goes in flat between them. Most beekeepers carry both patterns.

Best multi-tool
AukBeeFun 7-in-1 Stainless Hive Tool with Wood Handle
AukBeeFun's 7-in-1 stainless tool with a wood handle: scraper, J hook, frame lifter and four more functions across two ends, $13.99.
- Length
- 10.6 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Steel
- Stainless, grade not stated; solid wood handle (per the Amazon listing)
- Type
- 7-in-1 multi-tool
- Weight
- 10.4 oz (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- A handle, which the flat tools lack
- Scraper, hook and lifter in one
- Heavier than the bare tools, which helps on propolis
Cons
- The handle stops it going flat between boxes
- Grade not stated
- Listing figures only
AukBeeFun's 7-in-1 is listed at 10.6 inches with a solid wood handle and seven functions over two ends: scraper, J hook, frame lifter and others, in stainless steel. The handle makes it a better scraper and a worse pry bar; for propolis on top bars it is the one to reach for.
Best frame grip
WEICHUAN Stainless Steel Frame Grip
Stainless jaws and a polished beech handle that lift a frame one-handed, wired or unwired, $7.99.
- Length
- 6.3 x 4.8 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Steel
- Stainless jaws, beech wood handle (per the Amazon listing)
- Type
- Frame grip
- Weight
- Not stated
Pros
- One hand on the frame, the other on the smoker
- Works on wired and unwired frames (per the listing)
- Wooden handle does not get hot in the sun
Cons
- A grip can crush bees on the top bar; look first
- Adds a tool to carry
- Listing figures only
WEICHUAN's frame grip is listed with stainless steel jaws and a polished beech handle, 6.3 by 4.8 inches, for wired and unwired frames. It lifts a frame by the top bar in one hand, which matters once the J hook has freed it; BeeCastle's and Honey Lake's tool kits include one, and this is the standalone.
Best bee brush
Acostop 13.8-inch Natural Horsehair Bee Brush
A 13.8-inch natural horsehair brush, 3.5 inches wide, for sweeping bees off a frame at harvest, $9.99.
- Length
- 13.8 in; 3.5 in wide (per the Amazon listing)
- Steel
- None; natural horsehair (per the Amazon listing)
- Type
- Bee brush
- Weight
- 2.39 oz (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Horsehair, which is soft enough not to roll bees
- Long enough to clear a frame in one stroke
- Also sold with a J hook as the Acostop pair ($8.99)
Cons
- Brushing annoys bees; a brush is for harvest, not inspection
- Hair sheds in the first weeks
- Listing figures only
Acostop's brush is listed at 13.8 inches long and 3.5 inches wide in natural horsehair. A brush is for clearing bees off honey frames at harvest and off the top bars before a lid goes back; it is not an inspection tool, because brushed bees get angry. The Acostop J hook and brush pairs the same brush with a 10.5-inch J hook for $8.99, which is cheaper than the brush alone when read.
How we chose
Tools were judged on stated length, steel grade, pattern (J hook, standard, multi), weight and price on October 9, 2026. The supplier tools (Mann Lake 9 1/2-inch stainless $15.99, 10 1/2-inch J frame lifter $9.99, 6 1/8-inch mini $8.99, 9-inch EZ Pry $19.99; Dadant 9 1/2-inch painted, 6-inch pocket, 12.5-inch Turbo) are described for comparison from their pages.
J hook or standard
The J hook (KINGLAKE, Sunshane, Mann Lake's J frame lifter) has a hook at one end that goes under a frame lug and levers it up against the next frame, which is how the first frame comes out of a full box. The standard tool (KINGLAKE scraper, Mann Lake 9 1/2, Dadant 9 1/2) has a bent end for scraping and a flat bevelled end for prying boxes apart; its flat profile goes between propolized boxes where a J hook's curve will not. Most beekeepers carry one of each.
Length
Nine and a half to ten and a half inches is the standard; Dadant's 12.5-inch Turbo and Mann Lake's 9-inch EZ Pry are for separating stuck boxes. Six-inch pocket tools are for the back pocket and for a queen cage.
Steel
304 stainless (KINGLAKE states it) does not rust and does not hold an edge as long as spring steel; Dadant's painted tools are US spring steel, which holds an edge and rusts if left out. Either is fine; the paint on red tools is there to be seen in grass, and wears off the blade.
Frame grips and brushes
A frame grip lifts a freed frame one-handed; a brush clears bees off a frame at harvest. Neither is an inspection tool. The tool kits from BeeCastle ($27) and Honey Lake ($24) in the smoker guide include both.
Comparison
| Tool | Pattern | Length | Steel | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KINGLAKE J hook | J hook | 10 1/2 in | 304 stainless, painted | $5.49 |
| KINGLAKE scraper | Standard | 10 in | 304 stainless | $8.69 |
| Sunshane 2-pack | J hook | 10.5 in | Stainless | $7.99 |
| AukBeeFun 7-in-1 | Multi, handled | 10.6 in | Stainless | $13.99 |
| Mann Lake 9 1/2 in | Standard | 9 1/2 in | Stainless | $15.99 |
| Mann Lake J frame lifter | J hook | 10 1/2 in | Not stated | $9.99 |
| Dadant 9 1/2 in | Standard | 9 1/2 in | US spring steel, painted | Not read |
Care
Scrape propolis off while warm; it sets like resin cold. A tool left in the hive is found at the next inspection, and one left in the grass is why the red ones exist. Sharpen the scraping edge with a file once a season.
What to skip
Skip a screwdriver or paint scraper; they are the wrong thickness and split top bars. Skip a hive tool with no stated length. And skip the biggest multi-tools for prying boxes; the handle keeps the blade out of the joint.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best hive tool for beginners?
A J hook (KINGLAKE's 10 1/2-inch 304 stainless for $5.49) for lifting the first frame, and a standard flat tool (KINGLAKE's 10-inch for $8.69) for prying boxes. Together they cost less than one supplier tool.
J hook or standard hive tool?
Both. The J hook levers the first frame out of a full box; the standard tool's flat bevelled end goes between propolized boxes. Supplier tools come in both patterns (Mann Lake 9 1/2-inch standard $15.99, J frame lifter $9.99).
Do I need a frame grip?
Not at first. A grip lifts a freed frame one-handed, which is useful once you are working with a smoker in the other hand. WEICHUAN's is $7.99 and the tool kits include one.
When should I use a bee brush?
At harvest, to sweep bees off honey frames, and to clear top bars before a lid goes back on. Not during inspections; brushed bees get defensive. Horsehair (Acostop, $9.99) is soft enough not to roll them.
Stainless or painted steel hive tool?
304 stainless (KINGLAKE) does not rust; Dadant's painted spring steel holds an edge longer and rusts if left out. Red paint on either is there so the tool shows up in grass.
How long should a hive tool be?
Nine and a half to ten and a half inches for everyday work. Longer tools (Dadant's 12.5-inch Turbo) are for stuck boxes; six-inch pocket tools are for the back pocket.
