A smoker is a stainless can with a perforated grate at the bottom, a bellows and a spout, and the differences that matter are the chamber size (a bigger can burns longer), the heat shield (the cage that lets you hold it) and whether the bellows pushes air to the bottom of the fire. The Foxhound 12.5-inch Pro smoker ($45) is the biggest here, with a 4-inch chamber, a full heat guard and a heavy airflow plate; the VIVO smoker ($25) is the 4 by 7 inch standard with a shield and hook, the pattern Mann Lake and Dadant sell as their 4 by 7 economy models; the SunVara 11-inch ($17) is the budget pick with a shield and a double pull ring for gloved refuelling. The Goodland 11-inch ($33) adds three mugwort fuel logs, and the Honey Lake 16-piece kit ($24) bundles a smoker with the hive tools, uncapping tools and gloves.
Figures are the listings' (VIVO's own product page adds the 201 stainless grade and the 4 by 7 canister); prices are Amazon's on October 9, 2026. The supplier originals, Mann Lake's 4 by 7 economy smoker (5.30 by 7.80 by 11.10 inches, 1.80 lb) and Dadant's 4 by 7 Bingham-pattern smoker with Naugahyde bellows, are described for comparison without a price read.

Best overall
Foxhound 12.5-inch Pro Stainless Bee Smoker
A 12.5-inch stainless smoker with a 4-inch chamber, a full heat guard, a hook and a heavy airflow plate, from a US bee supply company, $45.
- Chamber
- 4 in diameter (per the Amazon listing)
- Height
- 12.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
- Shield
- Full heat guard around the chamber, with storage hook (per the Amazon listing)
- Fuel
- Pine straw, wood chips, cardboard, pellets (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- The tallest chamber here holds fuel for a full inspection
- Heavy airflow plate the listing says resists burn-out
- Hook for hanging on the hive
Cons
- Only 2 in stock when read
- $45 against $17 to $25 for the 11-inch cans
- Listing figures only
Foxhound Bee Company's Pro smoker is listed at 12.5 inches tall with a 4-inch chamber, a heat guard that fully surrounds the chamber, a built-in hook and a heavy-duty airflow plate in the fire chamber, in stainless steel, burning pine straw, wood chips, cardboard or pellets. The chamber height is what you pay for: Mann Lake sells the same idea as its 4 by 10 Pro-Bellow (2.30 lb against 1.80 for its 4 by 7), because a taller can holds more fuel and stays lit through a two-hive inspection. Stock was two when read; the VIVO is the fallback.
Best 4 x 7 standard
VIVO Stainless Steel Bee Hive Smoker (BEE-V001)
The 4 by 7 inch pattern every supplier sells, in 201 stainless with a heat shield, hook and perforated base, $25.
- Chamber
- 4 in diameter, 4 x 7 in canister (VIVO)
- Height
- 11 in bottom to spout tip (per the Amazon listing)
- Shield
- Heat shield with mounting hook (per the Amazon listing)
- Fuel
- Perforated fire base for airflow (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- VIVO publishes a product page with the steel grade (201 stainless) and dimensions
- Same size as Mann Lake's and Dadant's 4 by 7 smokers
- Hook
Cons
- 201 stainless is a lower grade than the 304 some makers use; it still does not rust in normal use
- 7-inch chamber needs refuelling on a long inspection
- Bellows material not stated
VIVO's smoker is listed at 11 inches from base to spout tip with a 4-inch canister, a heat shield, a mounting hook on the shield and a perforated fire base; VIVO's own page (model BEE-V001) gives 201 stainless steel and a 4 by 7 inch canister. That is the dimension Mann Lake's 4 by 7 economy smoker (5.30 by 7.80 by 11.10 inches, 1.80 lb, with shield) and Dadant's 4 by 7 stainless smoker share, so it is the standard size in a $25 can.

It is the tool kit for someone who bought woodenware only; the BeeCastle 9-piece kit ($27) is the comparable bundle with a shielded smoker.
How we chose
Smokers were judged on stated chamber size, height, heat shield and hook, airflow design, included fuel, steel grade where stated, stock and price on October 9, 2026. VIVO's own page supplied its steel grade and canister size; the rest are listing figures. The supplier originals from Mann Lake and Dadant are described for size comparison without a price read.
What a smoker does
Smoke masks the alarm pheromone bees release when the hive is opened and sends them into the comb to feed, which is why an inspection starts with a few puffs at the entrance and under the lid before anything is lifted. The extension guides assume a lit smoker for every inspection; Penn State's package installation guide and UF/IFAS's 4-H book both list it with the hive tool as the two tools that are always in hand.
Chamber size
The 4 by 7 inch canister (VIVO, Mann Lake economy, Dadant) holds fuel for one hive's inspection; the 4 by 10 (Mann Lake Pro-Bellow) and the 12.5-inch Foxhound hold enough for two or three. Bigger is better until the can is too heavy to hold in one hand; Mann Lake's figures are 1.80 and 2.30 pounds for its two sizes.
Heat shield and hook
The shield is a wire or sheet cage around the chamber; it is what lets you pick up a lit smoker and set it on a wooden lid. The hook on the shield hangs the smoker on the hive box while you work. Every pick here except the Honey Lake kit states both.
Fuel
Foxhound's listing names pine straw, wood chips, cardboard and pellets; Goodland includes mugwort logs; Mann Lake sells fuel and includes it in its starter kit. The rule from every supplier is cool, white smoke: a fire that has burned down to embers under packed fuel, not a flame. Nothing treated, glossy or synthetic. Light a small fire at the bottom, let it catch, pack fuel on top and pump until the smoke is cool on the back of your hand.

Care
Empty the smoker onto bare ground or into a metal bucket after use, never into a bin. Scrape creosote from the spout when it narrows. Bellows wear out before cans; Dadant's Naugahyde bellows are the replaceable kind, and the Amazon listings do not say whether theirs are.
What to skip
Skip a smoker with no shield; it cannot be set down lit. Skip the smallest cans for more than one hive. And skip buying fuel if you have a pine tree, a cardboard box or a lawn: the listings' pellets are a convenience, not a requirement.
Frequently asked questions
What size bee smoker should I buy?
A 4 by 7 inch canister (VIVO, Mann Lake, Dadant) covers one hive's inspection; a 4 by 10 or 12.5-inch can (Mann Lake Pro-Bellow, Foxhound Pro) stays lit for two or three hives. Mann Lake's weights are 1.80 and 2.30 pounds for the two sizes.
Do I need a heat shield on a bee smoker?
Yes. The shield is what lets you hold a lit smoker and set it on a hive lid, and the hook on it hangs the smoker on the box while you work. Every smoker here except the bundled one states a shield.
What do you burn in a bee smoker?
Pine straw, wood chips, cardboard, burlap, dry grass or pellets (Foxhound's listing names the first four; Goodland includes mugwort logs). Nothing treated, glossy or synthetic. The aim is cool white smoke from embers, not flame.
Why does my smoker keep going out?
Not enough embers under the fuel, or fuel packed before the fire caught. Light a small fire at the base, let it burn a minute, add fuel on top and pump until the smoke is thick and cool. Smokers with an airflow funnel or plate (SunVara, Foxhound) direct the bellows at the base.
Is the VIVO smoker the same as the Mann Lake one?
Same 4 by 7 inch canister size and shield pattern. VIVO states 201 stainless; Mann Lake's economy smoker is 5.30 by 7.80 by 11.10 inches and 1.80 pounds with shield. Prices for the supplier smokers were not read for this guide.
Should I buy a smoker in a tool kit?
If you bought woodenware only, the Honey Lake 16-piece ($24) or BeeCastle 9-piece ($27) kits put a smoker, hive tools and a brush in one order. The kit smokers are the small type; a standalone 4 by 7 or larger is the first upgrade.
