A manual extractor is the right machine for one to three hives: a few supers a season, spun by hand in an afternoon. The VEVOR 2/4-frame ($110, two deeps or four mediums, with an adjustable stand and a clear lid) is the pick; the VEVOR 3-frame ($105, 24 by 15 inch 201 stainless drum) takes three of any depth for less. The supplier options are Mann Lake's 2-frame plastic ($130, 12.2 pounds), Betterbee's 2-frame plastic ($115, any Langstroth size) and Betterbee's Maxant 2-frame ($399, 20-gauge stainless, medium and shallow frames only). Dadant's Junior Bench 2-frame (24-gauge 304 stainless, 14 by 23 1/4 inches) and heavy-duty 2-frame (22 gauge, 16 by 24 inches, 40 pounds) are the bench machines; their prices were not read.
Frame capacity by size, drum and steel, stand and price are the comparison; the main extractor guide has the electric machines and the sizing table.

VEVOR's 2/4 manual is listed for two deep frames or four medium or shallow, with a hand crank, a transparent lid and an adjustable-height stand, at 21.4 pounds. The frame sizes it states match standard Langstroth frames (19 by 9 1/8 deep, 19 by 6 1/4 medium per Hoover and Betterbee). It is tangential, so each frame is spun, flipped and spun again; at two or three hives that is fine.
Best budget
VEVOR 3-Frame Manual Honey Extractor
Three frames of any depth in a 24 by 15 inch 201 stainless drum, 26 pounds, $105.

How we chose
Manual extractors were judged on frame capacity by size, drum dimensions and steel where stated, stand, weight and price on October 9, 2026, from the listings (VEVOR's site for the 3-frame drum) and the suppliers' pages. Dadant's bench machines are described from its pages without a price read.

How a tangential extractor is used
Uncap both sides of the frame, load with the comb facing the wall, spin slowly until the outer side is mostly empty, flip, spin the second side fully, flip back and finish the first. Spinning a full-weight frame hard on the first pass breaks new comb from the inside. A clear lid (VEVOR 2/4) lets you see when the honey stops flying.
Plastic or stainless
Plastic drums (Mann Lake, Betterbee) are light and cheap and flex; stainless (VEVOR, Maxant, Dadant) is heavier, cleans with hot water and lasts. 201 stainless (VEVOR) is a lower grade than 304 (Dadant); both are stainless. Gauge is thickness: Maxant's 20 is thickest, Mann Lake's 6/3 at 26 the thinnest named.
Before you buy
Ask the club. Most lend an extractor, and Mann Lake's note that it can take two seasons to draw the supers means a first-year beekeeper often has nothing to spin. The harvest checklist lists the rest of the kit; the uncapping guide the knives and forks.
What to skip
Skip a 2-frame machine for four or more hives; the electric guide is for that. Skip the Maxant if you run deeps. And skip spinning uncapped or half-capped frames; Oregon State's bar is at least 80 percent capped.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2-frame extractor enough?
For one to three hives, yes: a 10-frame super is five loads of two deeps or three loads of four mediums, an hour's work. For four or more hives, a 4/8-frame electric.
Do manual extractors take deep frames?
VEVOR's two models and Betterbee's plastic 2-frame do; Betterbee's Maxant 2-frame does not. Check the stated frame size (VEVOR: deep 18.9 by 9 inches).
Plastic or stainless manual extractor?
Plastic (Mann Lake $130, Betterbee $115) is light and cheap; stainless (VEVOR $105 to $110, Maxant $399) cleans with hot water and lasts. VEVOR states 201 stainless; Dadant states 304.
How do I use a tangential extractor?
Comb faces the wall. Spin the first side slowly until mostly empty, flip and spin the second side fully, flip back and finish. Hard spinning on a full frame breaks new comb.
What does a Dadant extractor cost?
We did not read prices for Dadant's Junior Bench (24-gauge 304 stainless, 14 by 23 1/4 inches) or heavy-duty 2-frame (22 gauge, 16 by 24 inches, 40 pounds); their construction figures are from Dadant's pages.
Should a beginner buy an extractor?
Usually not in year one. Mann Lake notes it can take two seasons for a colony to draw its supers, and most clubs lend a machine. Buy when the club's is always out or the hives pass three.
